An article featuring Ms. Joy Ablanida
Ms. Joy Flores-Ablanida, 43, has been working with the same company for the last seven years. She is used to working under pressure, meeting deadlines, seamlessly accomplishing one task after another, and has mastered effective communication within and outside of work.
As an Accounts Director at a Cebu-based advertising firm Lilu Advertising & Marketing Solutions, Ms. Ablanida handles, oversees, and manages client accounts. Her tasks involve developing branding, advertising and marketing campaigns and strategies for online or offline platforms, media relations, content marketing, and more. With all the responsibilities her position requires, she makes sure that she delivers quality services to the clients. She said, “A major part of my role is building and maintaining good relationships with clients by ensuring that their requirements are met.”

The advertising firm she works at has a small workforce. It only has four employees. There are three managerial positions within the company and the hierarchical order of these positions is as follows: (1) Managing Director, (2) Accounts Director, (3) Senior Accounts Manager. Despite having this structure, all of the members of the company get to check and contribute their inputs to the projects they handle.
“I report to the Managing Director at Lilu Ads. Our unique setup is due to our small size, which means that all team members are involved in all projects,” she said.
Usually, it is their Managing Director who would have the final say in things that needed for approvals, but in cases wherein the Managing Director is not available, Ms. Ablanida, who is the Accounts Director, and or the Senior Accounts Manager would step up.
As the Director, Ms. Ablanida highly depends on communication, given the size of their company and the nature of their work. For her, the success of the projects that they handle relies on the effectiveness of their communication with both their clients and within their team. Internally, the team maintains an open communication with one another. Unlike other companies with a larger number of employees and with top-down management, Ms. Ablanida said that the members of their company can directly communicate with each other, which helps them save time and resources.
“In every email that we send, we ‘CC’ all the team members so that all of them can see and check the documents being communicated,” Ms. Ablanida shared.
For external communication, which is mostly with clients, they make use of social media messaging apps such as Messenger and Viber to ensure that their clients can communicate to them directly. They usually create group chats with their clients to make sure that they are on the same page on project-related information.
“Since we are in the business of marketing communications, we must translate to campaigns what our clients need to communicate to their customers,” she said.
The company follows a specific communication system which works for them and for their clients. First, they meet with clients and find out their requirements. The clients will discuss with the company the specifics for the project.
Second, based on the client’s requirements, the team will brainstorm to create and send a proposal. During this step, a lot of internal communication happens in the company. Everyone in the team will be working on a proposal that would apply the instructions of the clients.
Third, they wait for the client’s approval of the proposal they made. Their external communication comes into play during this step. They normally send proposals, layouts, and quotations through email for proper documentation.
Lastly, once the proposal has been approved, the team will agree on the deliverables needed and how to execute them.
Even if the company has been following a systematic process of communication internally & externally, Ms. Ablanida said that there are still barriers they need to overcome. She highlighted the barriers they experienced during the pandemic. She said that although communicating virtually is faster and convenient, they commonly experience technical issues.
“While video conference tools such as Google Meet, Zoom, or Teams are convenient, technical issues like poor internet connection and unclear audio can affect communication,” she stated.
To address this barrier and ensure that their team can still communicate effectively, they make sure to have face-to-face sessions and meetings whenever possible and make use of the group chats they have to clarify deliverables.
Ms. Ablanida also elaborated on the struggle of having difficult clients to handle. In times like this, the team will go heavy on following up and clarifying what the clients want. She said, “Whenever we encounter issues, especially with deliverables, we always encourage our clients to provide a clear picture of what they need so that we can better understand their requirements.”
Having to stick to specific timelines and deadlines can put pressure on Ms. Ablanida and the whole team of four. To deal with this, she said that they usually take in at most three to four clients at a time. This way, they can ensure that they can provide their clients the attention and the high-quality service they deserve.
The ability to openly communicate with workmates and clients has led the company to achieving great milestones in the field of advertising and marketing. They have produced many remarkable projects which Ms. Ablanida takes pride in.
Running a company, no matter how small it is, has its own successes and challenges. Ms. Joy Flores-Ablanida is able to perform her duties as an Accounts Director through effective communication management. Her constant communication with her team and her clients have helped in accomplishing remarkable projects and maintaining a healthy work environment where the whole team can grow and thrive.
